Indian Student Group Banned for Criticizing PM Modi's Beef Ban
Chennai, India: The Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle (APSC) at the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras (IIT-Madras) had their status as a campus group revoked as punishment for an anonymous complaint that the group was critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s political party’s support for a national beef ban.
Steve Macías, Organization for Minorities of India, interviews Prabha Karan for a closer look at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assault on the right to free speech in India.
Before being banned, the ASPC held meetings on the college campus to discuss current political and social issues. The proposed ban on the sale and possession of beef encouraged lively discussion at the group where many students feel the ban is a forceful attempt to push the Hindu religion upon Indian minorities like Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, and Dalits.
