Trinity Anglican Church to host dinner and seminar with minority communities

Marysville, CA: Oct. 5, 2015 — Sikh and Christian leaders will host a dinner and seminar on October 10 at Trinity Anglican, a Christian Church in Marysville, CA to discuss similar persecution facing both communities in India.

Laws restricting religious freedom and the persecution of Christians in India drew national headlines recently as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited California’s Silicon Valley. Many stateside Christians and Sikhs protested Modi’s visit based on his anti-conversion legislation that criminalizes religious conversion without government permission. Dissenters protest the laws target non-Hindus and encourage mass “re-conversion” ceremonies known as “Ghar Wapsi” (homecoming), which intimidate individuals into converting to Hinduism under threat of physical violence or the loss of government benefits.

“We believe that what affects one community in India affects us all,” says Father Joshua Lickter, a Christian priest and a speaker for the event. “All of humanity shares the image of God and Christians need to take it seriously when individuals bearing his image are oppressed anywhere.” Speakers will highlight the persecution of Indian Christians, how other minority communities like Sikhs are also at severe risk, and discuss root causes.
