OHCHR Briefing: Torture Commmon by Police Officers in India

\A 5-page report composed for the United Nations about the prevalent practice of torture by India’s police officers. Every four years, all 192 UN Member States are subject to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) by the UN’s Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). This involves a review of the human rights records of each state. Decisions are made, in part, based upon evidence provided by human rights groups. The next UPR occurs in May 2012 and this is OFMI’s submission.

Demons Withins: The Systematic Practice of Torture by Indian Police

A 56-page report comprehensively covering the problem of torture being used habitually by Indian police officers. This report discusses all aspects of the issue, including India’s climate of impunity for torture by police, the history of its use by police, the most common methods employed, the regular application of torture to known innocents and the incentivies provided by India’s central government in Delhi for police to engage in atrocities.
